Other Simulation Software Nowadays, there are many simulation software for building design available. The temperature, humidity and rainfall can be displayed in this way, too.ģ.
It’s just a possibility to display site information in the model. The analysis of prevailing winds is not a simulation that reacts on the 3D model imported to Ecotect. If your climate data contains information on wind direction and wind speed, those can be displayed in the simulation model. Especially the function of displaying shadow range on a specific day is useful to check oversharing of buildings in stock before starting a design concept. If necessary, the building-surfaces reflecting characteristics can be adjust in a first step. Furthermore the shadows can be displayed in relation to the sun position. In this way, the position of the sun can be checked on every season. The user can adjust the sun position to a specific day and hour directly in the displayed sun path diagram. It is possible to display the sun position in the simulation model, based latitude and longitude. In the picture, an example for an interior daylight analysis is shown. In city planning, it is useful to adjust the use-structure of a site, based on the quantity of daylight on every season. In a detailed 3D-Building Model, the position of doors and windows can be checked and optimized. With Ecotect, the percentage of daylight access to a surface can be calculated. The presence of daylight on outside or inside surfaces is an important planning factor. The result of the analysis is the number of total sunlight hours
The software allows exploring the insolation on an hourly, daily monthly or yearly basis. In the insolation analysis, the proportion on diffuse and direct insolation can be estimated on every surface in the model. Those are insolation, daylight, shadows and reflection or the prevailing winds. In this project, just the analysis tools with low building detail required were explored. They exceed the design options of a city planner, who normally only prepares the basis for the architects building design. These analyses can only be made with highly detailed models. Because it’s developed for architect, most of the analyses are on energy efficiency. Go to topĮcotect can be used for several analyses. As product of the Autodesk software-family, it is supposed to be used in combination with Revit for architectural design.īecause no highly detailed models or further architectural details were required, Revit has been replaced by SketchUp in the working process (shown in picture). The simulation tool aims to support the designer in every step of the designing process. Based on complex weather data it can be used to evaluate how much the building-design is adapted to the climate. But SketchUp is more easy to handle hence the models can be made more quick.Įcotect Analysis is a building analysis tool published by Autodesk in 2009.

Google professional allows to export models to a dxf-format, which can be imported to Ecotect for analysis.

It is offered by Google in a free and a professional version. With SketchUp, it is easy to create simple 3D Models. In the project, two softwares were used for the site analysis: Google SketchUp to quickly create simple 3D-Models of the buildings in the project-area and Autodesk Ecotect for the analysis itself. This page gives you an overview over the different analysis and how they can be performed with the software products that were used in this project.
